Resolution Reset - 5 Simple Swaps for a Sustainable 2023
If you’re anything like me, you love making New Year’s Resolutions! But that usually means that I make too many – and then I end up not keeping any of them! So, by mid-January, I’m left feeling discouraged. But this year instead of being discouraged, I’m deciding to be kind to myself. I’m dubbing January 20th Resolution Reset Day! Now that we’re back into the swing of life after the holidays and settled into the New Year, we can make more realistic resolutions or give ourselves permission to edit our original ones. What’s important is that we don’t stop working toward our goals. Who’s with me?!
Below I’ve listed some of the simplest, but most effective sustainable living swaps that we can resolve to make in 2023, if you need some inspiration. Pick one, or all 5, and join me on a path to more sustainable living in 2023!
Swap single-use plastics for reusable alternatives
Plastic bags, straws, water bottles, and takeout containers are all common sources of single-use plastic waste. In 2023, make a commitment to use reusable alternatives like cloth bags, stainless steel straws (I like the wide ones!), and a reusable glass water bottle. For takeout containers, bring your own container (how simple is this?!) or ask the restaurant to use biodegradable or reusable options. And my favorite reusable alternative for a single use plastic is, of course, a menstrual cup! I made the switch to Pixie Cup years ago (long before I ever dreamed of working here!) and I’ve never looked back!
With 6 different sized cups and two different sized discs, Pixie Cup is sure to have a product that fits your unique anatomy.

Swap paper products for cloth alternatives
Paper towels, napkins, and even toilet paper all contribute to deforestation and waste. In 2023, make a commitment to using cloth alternatives like cloth napkins, reusable paper towels (these even come on a roll!), and even a bidet can be an alternative to toilet paper. (Listen, I chuckled at the thought of this, but this is a game changer!) Not only will this reduce waste, but it will also save you money in the long run.
Swap synthetic fabrics for natural fibers
Synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, and acrylic are made from petroleum-based products and take hundreds of years to break down. In 2023, make a commitment to buying clothes and linens made from natural fibers like cotton, linen, and hemp which are more sustainable and biodegradable. Some staples to start with are wool socks and cotton clothing from Fair Indigo.
Swap chemical-laden cleaning products for natural alternatives
Many cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to both human health and the environment. In 2023, make a commitment to using natural cleaning alternatives like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils (Plant Therapy is my favorite brand!) for cleaning your home. You can also make your own cleaning products with these ingredients, which can save you money and reduce packaging waste. Make sure to grab an amber spray bottle!
Swap energy-wasting appliances for energy-efficient alternatives
Okay, granted this one is a bit more pricey, but has the potential to save you thousands of dollars. Energy-efficient appliances use less energy and can save you money on your monthly bill. In 2023, make a commitment to swapping out old appliances for newer, energy-efficient models. This can include things like light bulbs, washing machines, and even your refrigerator.
In Conclusion
Now, it’s important to note that sustainability is not just about the products you use, but also about the way you use them. Be mindful of the amount of resources you consume and try to consume less in general. If we commit together now, we can meet up again next year and share of our sustainability victories! To bettering ourselves and the world!
